Indigenous communities thrived since time immemorial.  With the ever-increasing population, societies created systems for governance.  Today, these traditional ways have been overtaken by Western ways of governance. In order to understand our society, it is important to know how these systems developed.  

Each Indigenous nation was given a language of their own to speak.  We always say that the language is sacred.  Each word spoken carries our beliefs and values.  It is time for Indigenous communities to work prioritize a language curriculum in schools.  

An Indigenous language-based curriculum is intended for all learners who live within a community.  Language is a social and interactive undertaking that for all community members.  

Indigenous language curriculum may be taught to all ages.  The earlier a child is immersed into a language, they acquire the language naturally.  No matter what stage of language development in  your community, a curriculum can be developed.  

How a language-based curriculum is taught is dependent upon the community.  Each community is unique.  There are several models for developing and implementing a curriculum.  Each community must develop a plan of action to revitalize their language. 

A language curriculum can be taught in various setting.  The best approach is to connect the language to culture, stories, relatives, and land.
